What Is PHP?

PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor. It is a popular scripting/programming language used for the interactivity part of web development. It runs on a web server and is typically used for backend tasks like validating a user and fetching data from a backend.

WordPress comprises four kinds of code - HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP. While HTML and CSS and responsible for the website’s appearance (i.e. fonts, text formatting, layout, etc.),

JavaScript and PHP are used to add interactivity to the site. In essence, JavaScript and PHP dictate how the website will respond to the user.

Using both languages, you can do things like user validation, form submission, UI movements, form submission, database interactions, and so on.

Whenever you visit a WordPress site or page on your browser, some PHP programs run in the background to generate the requested site. These programs are encapsulated in PHP files (i.e. ends with the .php extension)

All WordPress themes and plugins are powered by PHP. This makes PHP the underlying language in WordPress, hence the need to keep it up-to-date.

Why You Should Keep PHP up-to-date

PHP is being updated periodically, and each new version comes with speed and performance improvements. With PHP, new is better.

As PHP continues to undergo these updates, using older versions of your WordPress site will leave the site vulnerable to malicious hackers, software incompatibility, and performance-related issues.

The latest PHP version (v8) is far quicker than older versions, for example. To keep your site fast and secure, you must always check and update your WordPress to the recommended PHP version to avoid devastating security breaches.

How to Find the Latest Available Version of PHP
